Media Rituals- Luis Guerrero-

"Supervivientes" which the direct translation from English is "survivors" is about a group of celebrities with a great desire for adventure who are transferred to a lost island far from the world, there begin hardships and the "unforgettable" moments.  The 'survivors' will have to survive both the complicated conditions that the program has devised for them and the meteorological adversities that are repeated every year. Panama, Santo Domingo, Kenya, Honduras... these are some of the remote 'paradises' where celebrities have been sent in successive seasons.

The contestants will have to use everything they find in nature to build their new life. The food, the food, the fire, the utensils... everything will have to be built from the most scarce raw material. Celebrities don't usually stand out because of their skills, so seeing them survive without any luxury is most of the time very funny.

The contestants have to fight to be proclaimed 'leader' of the camp and, in this way, get immunity in the nominations of their companions. Everyone wants to fight for the prize of the grand final and be paid.

The example of the Survivors can be considered a media ritual based on Nick Couldry's chapter (2003) because they use strategies to recreate live reality in which the reality that the participants are living is shown and how there is even a camera that records 24 hands you can see how the contestants fish and feed themselves through that food that they have caught or livestock in some of the tests they are doing. You can see how there are many cameras that are hidden and how they show images of the contestants even in more private moments which make the audience more hooked on this reality.

Another factor that takes more importance in this reality is that there is no script. What this indicates is that there is a greater sense of improvisation and a place for us to really see how the celebrity behaves in disastrous conditions such as being in the middle of an island with hardly any food and surrounded by people in your same condition. According to Nick Couldry (2003), there are rituals that bring people together, consequently media becomes a substitute for these rituals.
