David Harris: La isla de las tentaciones blog

The example that I have chosen for this blog entry is a TV show called La Isla de las Tentaciones, in English, called, The Island of Tentations. This tv show is about either finding love or being committed to your partner. There are two sides to the spectrum. On one side, some women are trying to find love that lives for a month with men in relationships, and the girlfriends of the men live with single men trying to find love. In this show, five couples go into a house with eight single women or men trying to find love. This tv show is made for the people living in the house to test their relationships and try to stay committed, which is not the case most of the time. This tv show has gone viral in Spain over the past year due to its drama among the people living on the island and the spectators loving that drama. The example of La Isla de las Tentaciones can be considered a media ritual based on Nick Couldry's chapter (2003) because they use strategies to recreate live reality since it airs a few weeks after its first episode. Also, the truth-telling tools that they use are live footage, hidden-cameras, and the inclusion of 'ordinary people' and their privacy. The live footage that they use is uncensored, even when they curse or even have sex, and for some people, that might be an invasion of privacy, but that is something that the spectators want to see due to the drama that it produces in social media. There are hidden-cameras all through the island, and that is made so if one of the men or women in a relationship cheats on them anytime during the show, the audience can see it. Lastly, this show includes 'ordinary people' and their privacy because they are normal human beings with jobs and relationships. Also, this could be any neighbor or peer someone might know. This tv show has become so influential in Spain over the past year that it has even created a media ritual among spectators where friends go to other friends' houses to watch this tv show go on and comment about it while it is going on. Also, this tv show has become viral on Twitter in Spain, and that has caught the attention of many people not watching this show. Even though some people might not have watched this show in Spain, people still know about it because it has become influential not just to the youth but to people of all ages.
