Coronavirus: WHO warns Europe over “very serious” Covid surge
Description: The article explains the rise in corona virus cases using data and statistics. The author quotes the director of the World Health Organization who describes this surge as a wake up call for Europeans. He continues to compare the number of cases in various European countries as well as describe the potential causes. I also noticed a potential bias where the author credits this rise in cases to more comprehensive testing.
Analysis: While this article is quite short and focuses mainly on the reality of what is occurring in Europe, a pattern that I noticed is that the author focuses on the causes and what this means for different countries. He discusses some of the new lockdown measures that some European countries will be taking, or have already. The UK will be limiting social gatherings along with Spain and the Netherlands. In addition to looking at how this impacts the government, the author looks at why these numbers are increasing. An example of some analysis that the author gives is that many of the cases during this second round are younger populations causing the number of cases to go up, but decreasing the death toll.
Interpretation: The purpose of this article is to warn Europeans of this rise in cases and advise them to re enforce some rules and lockdowns. Along with this warning to countries already affected, it is a warning to countries that are on the rise and are looking at opening back up soon. After seeing better numbers over the summer, many European countries got too confident and opened back up too soon. This article serves as a warning for Europe but also for countries thinking about opening back up.
Evaluation: I found this news article to be fairly accurate and unbiased. While I mentioned a slight bias toward European countries earlier, the base of the article is based on statistics and facts and serves as a warning to all countries. While the author defends Europe a little by excusing the testing, the article is still fairly negative and calls Europe out for re opening too soon based on the date given. Overall the article is fair, non discriminatory and informational/educational.
Engagement; .The author shows some bias by stating that Europe’s rise in cases is due to more comprehensive testing. Initially, I found this to be potentially problematic or biased however after re reading the article and thinking about it more, it was a fair statement to make. Testing in Europe has expanded and become more available. Another reason I found it to not demonstrate bias was because the overall purpose of the article was not to make Europe look better but to demonstrate how poorly they are doing and to warn others.
