David Harris Blog

This is David Harris 5 step critical analysis on Lapo’s BBC News article on contracting COVID 19 from food packages that I chose to defend due to the lack of information that people have regarding this issue.

Lapo’s article and response caught my attention due to the fact that it deals with contracting COVID 19 from food packaging, and that is something that not many people take into consideration. Packaging for some people is looked as clean and safe, at least when I eat a bag of chips, I am not worried that it is going to end up making me sick because of touching the package. The key elements of the story are showing how a package like chicken wings can cause as much harm as getting infected with COVID 19. Although in the article, it talks about how the chances are small, but how there are still chances of contracting COVID 19. The views of the victims are missing because in the article there are no interviews concluded, and we cannot hear the voices of the people that go to the grocery store and buy packages like chicken wings. This article speaks about how the location of where this is taking place is in China. This might be controversial to some people reading this article in the United States due to China’s conflict with the United States government, and their history of issues. The damage inflicted in this news story comes from frozen packages from South America because, in a way, South America is harming China by not cleaning the packages or even being unsanitary with them. Although, as I was reading this news story, I found it unsatisfying that this news report is ignoring the opinions of the witnesses, and how the witnesses don't have a voice in this article. At least, I find it more believable when someone that has seen the issue speaks about it and gives their view of the problem, maybe this way they can implement change into some people delivering the packages from South America. The ethical implications of this news article seem to raise awareness to other countries because it can happen anywhere since throughout the world there are millions of packages delivered every day from all seven continents. Although, this news story is accurate in the way it reports events because it comes from an approved new source, and also it is trying to raise awareness about the virus. What I like most about this article is that it is focusing on giving awareness of food packaging, and reaching out to people so that they are more cautious when delivering packages.

Comments

  1. I wish there were more articles published on this area and from a scientific approach, David. Does this article give any information about research done on the dangers of the virus remaining on surfaces? I believe this is one of the covid-19 related topics that we are most uninformed about. I do appreciate your comment about this article, potentially being bias and encouraging people not to trust products coming from China or South America. This is a very good point in terms of evaluation. I think your post would benefit from a more clear and explicit organization following the 5-steps described in the module. What about the engagement phase?
